I have an awesome friend, her name is Hyunju. She’s very famous as a designer Elizabeth in Korea. She’s a founder of huge Knitters’ community Knitting cafe. I met her almost 10 years ago when I was in Seoul. I was a newbie at the knitting world and I learned so many things from her and her Knitting cafe. I came to Canada and started built my carrier as a hand knit wear designer almost 5 years ago. She didn’t hesitate to celebrate for me and treat me as a colleague. When I went to Seoul a couple years ago, she and her friends made and wear one of my early design hexagon petal tee and showed off me all together. It was an amazing experiences.

I love this picture. I didn’t ask them to add this on my blog. But, I wish they could understand. Isn’t it lovely?

I was busy all the time. I’m very slow knitter and I was in stress to write pattern in second language last few years. It’s getting easier day by day fortunately. She sent me her pattern book on my birthday last year. It’s almost a year ago. I suggested her I would love to translate her pattern in English. It’s a loose fit Jacket based on triangle motives. I really wanted to make something for me and my friend.

Things are happend last winter. my arms and shoulders were bothering me a lot. Even I still feel pain sometimes and can’t knit longer. But, I don’t want to delay no more. One of deadline’s gone yesterday. I sent a sample and pattern to Colorado already. Now I have enough time to knit and write pattern. it’s very rare and lucky situation.

Pattern calls for worsted weight yarn. But, I’m knitting with Noro Taiyo sock yarn. I’m making 2 or 3 motives a day. I’m a slow knitter and loose knitter at the same time. My gauge is close for DK weight. Done front and working on back shoulder. So far so good. Wish I could finish knitting sweater and writing pattern before Christmas. I’m sure I can do it.

제게는 정말 멋진 친구가 한명 있습니다. 네이버에 있는 니팅카페를 개설하고 운영하고 있는 엘리사벳으로 더 유명한 분이지요. 처음 만난건 거의 10여년전이예요. 그때만해도 뜨개질에 초보였던 저는 정말 너무나 많은것들을 엘리사벳님과 니팅을 통해 배웠습니다. 의상디자이너이자 엠디(상품기획자)로도 일을 했었지만 본격적으로 핸드니트 디자이너가 되어 경력을 쌓기 시작한건 겨우 5년남짓 되었어요. 모두가 축하를 해주었던것은 아닙니다. 몇몇 커뮤니티에서는 가입이나 활동을 거부당하기도 했어요.  그와중에 진심어린 축하를 아끼지 않았고, 또 같은 일을 하는 동료로 받아 주었습니다. 약 2년전 서울에 갔었을때에는 함께 모임을 하는 회원분들과 함께 초기 디자인인 헥사곤 페탈티를 만들어 입고 나타나 주셨어요. 그때 그 기쁨과 감동을 뭐라고 설명할수 있을까요? 사진이을 찍고 보고 또보고 했습니다. 원래 미국에서 발행되는 매거진의 인터뷰 기사에 함께 싣게될 예정이었는데 편집장이 바뀌고 편집 방향이 바뀌면서 아쉽게 수록되지 못했어요. 저렇게 얼굴을 공개해 올리는것을 불편해 하실지 모르겠습니다. 그래서 한글 블로그에 올릴때는 살짝 가릴 생각이예요. 하지만 너무나 사랑스럽지 않나요?

저는 늘 바쁩니다. 게다가 손도 괭장히 느리지요. 모국어가 아닌 언어로 패턴을 쓰고, 그레이이딩을 한다는것은 정말 스트레스가 많이 쌓이는 일입니다. 하지만 다행스럽게도 시간이 지나면서 조금씩 익숙해지고 또 수월해 지고 있어요. 지난 겨울 생일 즈음에 엘리사벳님이 생일 선물로 낙양에서 출간된 작품집을 보내 주셨어요. 벌써 일년가까이 되었네요. 삼각형 모티브가 들어간 루즈한 핏의 쟈켓을 직접 만들어 보고 또 도안을 영어로 번역해 보고 싶다고 말씀 드렸어요.

모든일은 그 직후에 일어 났지요. 갑자기 팔과 어깨가 말을 듣지 않으면서 거의 반년간 뜨개질을 할수가 없었거든요. 많이 나아져서 이제는 조금씩 바늘과 실을 잡고 있지만 예전의 그 만큼은 스스로도 겁나서 하지 못하고 있어요.  그래도  20일이 데드라인인 패턴 하나를 보냈고, 또 샘플은 이미 콜로라도에 잘 도착을 했다고 하니 더 이상 미루고 싶지는 않습니다. 지금 이 순간 정말이 드물게 운좋게 찾아온  약 2주 반의 여유로은 시간.

패턴은 워스티드 두께의 실을 사용하도록 작성되어 있지만 저는 노로의 타이요 양말실을 사용하고 있어요. 손도 느리지만 헐겁기 까지 해서 DK(더블니팅)정도의 게이지가 나오네요. 하루에 2~3개 모티브를 만들여 이어가고 있는데 벌써 한쪽 앞판만큼의 모티브는 만들어 연결을 했습니다. 패턴은 조만간 여유를 즐기는 이참에 마무리를 하고 샘플은 늦어도 크리스마스를 넘기지 않는게 목표예요. 저는 할수 있습니다!  🙂
